The final audiobook in the Mysteries of Nature trilogy by the New York Times best-selling author of The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben.

Nature is full of surprises - deciduous trees affect the rotation of the Earth, cranes sabotage the production of Iberian ham, and coniferous forests can make it rain - but what are the processes that drive these incredible phenomena? And why do they matter?

In The Secret Wisdom of Nature, master storyteller and international sensation Peter Wohlleben takes listeners on a thought-provoking exploration of the vast natural systems that make life on Earth possible. In this tour of an almost unfathomable world, Wohlleben describes the fascinating interplay between animals and plants and answers such questions as "How do they influence each other?", "Do lifeforms communicate across species boundaries?", and "What happens when this finely tuned system gets out of sync?".

By introducing us to the latest scientific discoveries and recounting his own insights from decades of observing nature, one of the world's most famous foresters shows us how to recapture our sense of awe so we can see the world around us with completely new eyes.

  • If you like the style of previous Peter Wohlleben books then you will enjoy The Secret Wisdom of Nature. Choosing ecosystems for its theme, the book is more united by conveying scientifically valid facts with emotional resonance than by a strict focus on its subject. This is not to say that the book has no larger themes. Only that whether one likes the book will be less determined by virtue of its conclusions than by whether one likes anecdotal science.

Essentially, Wohlleben aims for depicting the incredible amount of interconnectedness and homeostasis that takes part at the macro level between plants and animals. Thus, we learn of the effects of bacteria thousands of feet under the earth as well as the perennial Wohllebenian theme of the tragedy of the loss of old growth forests.

While the material will not be as surprising to readers as the science in the Hidden Life of Trees this doesn’t mean that it is uninteresting or not worth reading.

And Wohlleben’s larger theme that macro-level ecosystems are so complex that it is best if we simply try to limit the effects of our species as much as possible—rather than intervene to recreate older biological homeostases—is well-argued and relevant to present day environmentalism.

I cannot say my worldview was transformed by this book, but I can say I was not only entertained but educated to have more informed opinions on environmental issues. His realistic but optimistic approach to handling such problems in the Anthropocene era is a refreshing change from more alarmist perspectives.

In short, there are no real faults in the book just less material than the Hidden Life of Trees which will completely surprise the reader. It’s worth adding the perspective, tone and information in this book to one’s outlook on nature.
  • The Secret Wisdom of Nature is the third in author Wohlleben's trilogy. The first dealt with trees and the second with animals. Both were marvelous in the way science and Wohlleben's anecdotes were interwoven into enjoyable and easy to read text. That's nothing to say of his great knowledge, much learned by first hand observation, of our physical world. Secret Wisdom is written in the same manner with the same surprising facts, e.g. killing wolves in Yellowstone caused erosion along riverbanks. Huh!? Yes it's true. On page 167 the author writes, "Does that sound complicated? I think so too."

The real emphasis on the third book is the effect people have had on the environment and surprisingly it seems that even actions meant to help often have deleterious effects. Germans have made an effort to feed roe deer helping them make it through hard winters. Now there are more deer than ever and of course the effect on woodlands is not the best as the browsers are doing what they do best.

There's a dark side to human activity as well. It seems our success as a species is based in part on our ability and willingness to kill anything that flies, swims, crawls, or walks. But putting that aside our complete domination of the planet, even when well intentioned, can have unintended consequences. Let me add a personal note. This winter was very cold with record setting snow. We decided to feed wild turkeys to get them though the winter. The 105 turkeys are doing fine but they have scared off the crows, blue jays, and woodpeckers. By helping one specie we have probably hurt others. This is much of what Wohlleben writes.

Same size book as first two with same paper and same size print. Maybe not as good as first two books (they were really ,really good) but I'm still glad I bought it. Recommended.
  • As with his other books, the author takes us deep into the life of our planet, re-teaching what I believe we once all knew when we were more in step with our natural world...how flora and fauna live intricate, inter-woven lives. Reading Peter's books brings us back into balance with Nature, I highly recommend you read all three books.
  • Love love love

  • I found it very interesting.

New Orleans’s reputation as a decadent city stems in part from its environmental precariousness, its Francophilia, its Afro-Caribbean connections, its Catholicism, and its litany of alleged “vices,” encompassing prostitution, miscegenation, homosexuality, and any number of the seven deadly sins. An evocative work of cultural criticism, Robert Azzarello’s Three Hundred Years of Decadence argues that decadence can convey a more nuanced meaning than simple decay or decline conceived in physical, social, or moral terms. Instead, within New Orleans literature, decadence possesses a complex, even paradoxical relationship with concepts like beauty and health, progress, and technological advance.

Azzarello presents the concept of decadence, along with its perception and the uneasy social relations that result, as a suggestive avenue for decoding the long, shifting story of New Orleans and its position in the transatlantic world. By analyzing literary works that span from the late seventeenth century to contemporary speculations about the city’s future, Azzarello uncovers how decadence often names a transfiguration of values, in which ideas about supposed good and bad cannot maintain their stability and end up morphing into one another. These evolving representations of a decadent New Orleans, which Azzarello traces with attention to both details of local history and insights from critical theory, reveal the extent to which the city functions as a contact zone for peoples and cultures from Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Drawing on a deep and understudied archive of New Orleans literature, Azzarello considers texts from multiple genres (fiction, poetry, drama, song, and travel writing), including many written in languages other than English. His analysis includes such works of transcription and translation as George Washington Cable’s “Creole Slave Songs” and Mary Haas’s Tunica Texts, which he places in dialogue with canonical and recent works about the city, as well as with neglected texts like Ludwig von Reizenstein’s German-language serial The Mysteries of New Orleans and Charles Chesnutt’s novel Paul Marchand, F.M.C.

With its careful analysis and focused scope, Three Hundred Years of Decadence uncovers the immense significance―historically, politically, and aesthetically―that literary imaginings of a decadent New Orleans hold for understanding the city’s position as a multicultural, transatlantic contact zone.

The New Silk Roads The Present and Future of the World Audible Audio Edition Peter Frankopan Leighton Pugh Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • I enjoyed reading the author's first book, the silk road, and followed up immediately with this book. Big mistake.

This book reads like a political commentary catered to readers with strong negative feelings toward the current US administration. The emphasis would be justified if brexit, Trump, and other similar events in the past few years turned out to be historical pivotal events, but we do not know, and this is a question best left to future generations of historians.

As a fan of his first book, I wished he did not write this book. There are plenty of books on China's ambitions, there are plenty of books arguing for and against the current US adminstration, and there are no shortage of books on the US China relationship. This book adds neither new material nor insights. Other than the catchy title, I don't recall learning anything from reading this book.
  • This is today's and tomorrow's front page news, but it isn't talked about much because other news steals the spotlight. Read it now.
  • Frankopan updates his previous book with developments mainly about the Belt and Road Initiative. It’s a good attempt at making the material current, but he need not have done so. He could have done much better by emphasising how the Belt and Road Initiative is a modern continuation of old patterns or fulfilling the old dreams of connecting the East with the West. And what about the US, which is a late interloper in this game? Otherwise an excellent book.
  • I read this second Silk Roads book with the same fascination I gave the first one. wondering as I went along why the second one did not receive the raves of the first. Finally in the final chapter I realized the subject matter was current history and contained information the reader did not want to read about.
  • A nice continuation of the Silk Roads book, readable and timely book that helps you understand how history is unraveling in our time
  • Nothing
  • When asked about the significance of the French Revolution, it is said that Zhou Enlai responded “it was to early to tell”. It’s unclear whether this is an actual quote or just an urban myth. However, I feel that the thought could well apply to Peter Frankopan’s new book, “The New Silk Roads”.

Peter Frankopan’s original work, “The Silk Roads”, published in 2016 was a masterpiece of history. It opened the eyes of Western readers to the fact that there is more to the world than just the history of Europe and, later, the new world. Too many western readers think that world history broadly covers the Roman Empire, Dark Ages, Crusades, the discovery of the new world, the US Civil War, two World Wars and then victory for the west in the Cold War. Frankopan shows this to be so myopic. There is a vast history to China and central Asia that too many students do not study. This is a great shame as it seems that the arc of history is bending back away from the west to the east. Indeed, this is the purpose of Frankopan’s new book.

Despite the strength of the argument, to write a “sequel” only two years after the original books is overly ambitious to say the least. A longer perspective is required. In other words, while the world economy may be increasingly dominated by China and the east, it is too early to conclude that this is inevitable.

While Frankopan’s book is well written and a delight to read, we need more time to develop any firm conclusions. Having said this, I would still recommend both books to any reader with an interest in world history. Both books are provocative. Both books challenge orthodoxies. For this alone, Peter Frankopan must be commended.
  • I'm a huge fan of Frankopan's previous Silk Roads book. I bought "The New Silk Roads" early and at full price wanting to support an author of demonstrated quality -- whoops.

It's hard for me to comprehend this is the same author. This book reads as a collection of, often stale, current events. Any facts are left at surface level and any analysis ends with a snarky one-liner. That's the best half of it, anyway. The last half is dedicated to Trump and that horse is beat up until the final page. Well, so much for the Silk Roads. A disappointing effort -- unfortunately not worth the money or even the time.
